Award- winning Malaysian soprano Tan Sin Sim holds a Master of Music Degree in Voice Performance from The Boston Conservatory at Berklee (BoCo) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Performing Arts (Voice) from the University of Malaya. Sin Sim started voice training since the age of 9. She was then trained and performed abroad as Soprano I chorister member with the National Children Choir “SUARA MAS” (The Golden Voices) under the baton of Prof. Dr. Razak Abdul Aziz.

Sin Sim has received many accolades representing Malaysia in various International Singing Competitions, including a prestigious recognition as 1st Place Winner (Gold Award) of The 4th New Tang Dynasty Television International Chinese Vocal Competition in New York City, U.S. She was a grand finalist in the 2005 World Chinese Vocal Competition Concours Taipei, Taiwan; 1st Prize winner of Singapore Festa Canzone International Art Song Singing Competition; Three time winner of the Malaysia National Level Classical Singing Competition, to name a few.

As a merit scholarship recipient from Chang Ming Thean Foundation, Sin Sim has then further her voice training with distinguished voice pedagogues Dr. Marilyn Bulli, Professor Stephen Smith and has coached by the renowned opera répétiteur Michael Strauss and senior vocal coach Arlene Shrut from the Juilliard School. She was one of the selected Asian singers on the alumna batch of The Opera Works Advanced Artist Program, Los Angeles.

Sin Sim has given well-received solo recitals and concerts in the United States, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. Sin Sim also sung as guest appearance in recitals, soloist in symphonic, gala and sacred music concerts in local and abroad. Sin Sim has sung and worked with various music organizations and opera companies such as Amadeus Opera New York, the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center (KLPAC) Orchestra, Yin Qi Malaysia Sacred Music Organization , Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO), Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), and The Orchestra of Music Makers (OMM) Singapore, Virama Ensemble, Oriental Hua Yue (Chinese Instrumental) Ensemble, the Yuan Arts Management Malaysia.

Relocated back in the home country Malaysia from Singapore, she has then joined the Kuala Lumpur City Opera (KLCO) as principal singer since 2019. Sin Sim has portrayed a few prominent opera roles in the States, Malaysia and Singapore, such as Romilda (Serse), Giulietta (I Capuletti e i Montecchi) with The Boston Conservatory Opera, Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), in Boston Conservatory Opera Scenes, Tamiri (Il Re Pastore), with Amadeus Opera New York City; The Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte) with KLPAC Sinfonietta, Annina with Singapore Lyric Opera, Die Zweite Dame (Die Zauberflöte) with Kuala Lumpur City Opera (KLCO), as well as the leading protagonist role Adina (L’elisir D’amore) which showcased by KLCO under the baton of conductor Kevin Field in 2023. In the most recent engagement with 2024 KLCO annual opera, she sang the well-known soprano role Musetta (La Boheme) and received commendable reviews.

Besides operatic genre, Sin Sim has been the guest soloist in symphonic and sacred music. She was invited as guest soloist in oratorio concerts in the States as well as locally such as Handel’s Messiah; Haydn’s Die Schöpfung; Bach’s Magnificat in D Major; Mozart’s and Beethoven’s Coronation Mass in D Major; Joseph Martin’s Season of Wonder; Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Brahms’ Lieberslieder, Orff’s Carmina Burana and Mahler’s Symphony no. 8 (Symphony of A Thousand).

Sin Sim’s next upcoming public performance engagement- Soprano soloist in RondoFest’s Beethoven Symphony No.9 (Finale), June 2024, Penang; Musetta in KLCO main opera production of 2024. As a professionally trained singer with vast performance experiences in various genre, Sin Sim has often seen as one of the adjudicators/ panels in various international singing/ music competitions in local and abroad.

Sin Sim is currently appointed as adjunct voice faculty of the University of Malaya (UM) and University of Technology MARA (UiTM). She also teaches voice at The British International School of Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur City Opera (KLCO) and directing the Adult Choir Group of Nam Kheung Primary School Alumni Association.
