Dr. Ang is an eminent musician with extensive experience as a music educator, pianist, mezzo-soprano, and conductor. Over more than four decades, she has built a strong reputation for her expertise in piano didactics by training teachers and performers from various Malaysian states. She holds a doctorate in music from the North-West University, a master’s degree in music (piano didactics) from the University of Pretoria, a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Edinburgh, and performing and teaching licentiates in piano from the Trinity College of Music and the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in the United Kingdom. She is also a lifetime member of the Golden Key International Honour Society for excellence in scholastic achievement.
She began her musical journey at the tender age of six. She then pursued advanced level studies at the Federal Academy of Music with Mr. Harold Boe Ashcroft and Ms. Ada Weinman, where she was awarded a scholarship for her exceptional musical ability. Her studies culminated in her receiving the highest marks in Malaysia for the Licentiate Examination of the Royal Schools of Music in 1979. In the same year, she was talent scouted by Dr. Colin Kingsley of the University of Edinburgh and was accepted to study music at the undergraduate level. She was awarded the Rackstraw scholarship for academic excellence.
While in the United Kingdom, she studied piano with leading professionals such as Dr. Colin Kingsley and voice with Dr. Carolyn Coxon. She performed in numerous public recitals as a solo and collaborative pianist, particularly with the Edinburgh Society of Musicians, Chopin Circle, and the Scottish Arts Council. She also received accolades for her performance of Debussy’s piano works in a master-class conducted by the esteemed Professor Joseph Bloch of the Julliard School of Music. When she returned to Malaysia, she performed as a solo pianist in a two-piano recital and was a collaborative pianist for vocalists and choirs at performances organised by the Selangor Philharmonic Society. She was also highly commended for her piano accompaniment of opera singers from the prestigious Metropolitan Opera.
She began her teaching career with a special emphasis on piano students pursuing professional diploma-level examinations, both in performing and teaching. She then led the establishment of her music college, the Philharmonic College of Music, where she served as co-founder, principal, and music director for five years. Furthermore, as the Head of the Performing Arts Ministry of the Full Gospel Assembly in Kuala Lumpur from 1999 to 2016, she was actively involved in conducting choirs and ensembles, producing, and directing musicals.
Dr. Ang’s key accomplishments are evident in the achievements of her students, who have received High Scorer Awards at the advanced and diploma levels from both the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College in recognition of excellence in Malaysian piano examinations. Esteemed music institutions such as the Guildhall School of Music, the Royal College of Music, the University of Edinburgh, Chetham’s School of Music, and the Purcell School in the United Kingdom, as well as the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Australia, have accepted her students. Her students have also won major prizes in piano competitions such as the Malaysian Youth Music Festival, the Hong Kong (Asia Pacific) Piano Competition, the AIMS Young Musician Award, the 3rd Steinway and Sons Malaysia Youth Piano Competition, the Kingsburg International Music Competition, the Asia Pacific Arts Festival, the 5th Hong Kong International Youth Performing Arts Festival, the 19th Osaka International Music Competition, the Singapore Asia Youth Competition, the South East Asia (SEA) Piano Competition in 2020, and the 5th Steinway Malaysia Youth Competition.
In addition to her vast experience as a performer and educator, Dr. Ang has actively engaged with the music community as an adjudicator, external examiner, and lecturer. She has served as an adjudicator at various music competitions and festivals, including the Music Singapore 2024 International Competition, the 7th Le Petit Piano Festival (2023), held at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore, and the International Grand Music Festival (2021). Additionally, she has also conducted piano masterclasses as an adjunct lecturer at UCSI University’s Institute of Music and contributed to research in the field as an Extraordinary Researcher in the Research Niche Area (MASARA) of the North-West University, publishing articles in international music education journals.
Dr. Ang is also a much sought-after speaker, having presented at music symposiums and conferences held in South Africa, Azerbaijan, Singapore, and Malaysia. Her upcoming presentation at the 36th World Conference (Helsinki, Finland) organized by the International Society of Music Education demonstrates her ongoing commitment to advancing music education and professional development. Dr. Ang’s multifaceted contributions reflect her deep passion for music and dedication to nurturing talent in the next generation of musicians.
